Next feature – The Light Between Oceans – 8pm, Monday 7th August

The film tells the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife who rescue and adopt an infant girl adrift at sea. Years later, the couple discovers the child’s true parentage and are faced with the moral dilemma of their actions.

Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance and based on the 2012 novel of the same name by M. L. Stedman, this 2016 film stars Michael FassbenderAlicia VikanderRachel WeiszBryan Brown, and Jack Thompson.

Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) leads an elite team of investigators when gigantic spaceships touch down in 12 locations around the world. As nations teeter on the verge of global war, Banks and her crew must race against time to find a way to communicate with the extraterrestrial visitors.

Based on a short story by Ted Chiang and directed by Denis Villeneuve, the film also stars Forest Whitaker, Jeremy Renner and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Next Feature – Lion – 8pm, Monday 3rd July

A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.

Directed by Garth Davis, the film stars Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman & Rooney Mara. Released in 2016, it was nominated for a host of awards & won two BAFTAs. The film is based upon the autobiography written by Saroo Brierley.

Next Feature – Sully – 8pm, Monday 19th June

On 15th January 2009, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger tries to make an emergency landing in New York’s Hudson River after US Airways Flight 1549 strikes a flock of geese.

Miraculously, all of the 155 passengers and crew survive the harrowing ordeal, and Sullenberger becomes a national hero in the eyes of the public and the media.

Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.

Next Feature – Daniel Blake – 8pm, Monday 17th April

I, Daniel Blake is a 2016 British-French-German drama film directed by Ken Loach and written by Loach’s frequent collaborator Paul Laverty. It stars Dave Johns as Daniel Blake, who is denied employment and support allowance despite his doctor finding him unfit to work. Hayley Squires co-stars as Katie, a struggling single mother whom Daniel befriends.

The film won the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and the Prix du public at the  Locarno International Film Festival.

KEN LOACH FILM

Next Feature – Love & Friendship – 8pm, Monday 3rd April

Love & Friendship is a 2016 period comedy film written and directed by Whit Stillman. Based on Jane Austen‘s epistolary novel Lady Susan, written in 1794.

Starring Kate BeckinsaleChloë SevignyXavier Samuel and Stephen Fry, this film follows the exploits of the wry and calculating Lady Susan as she pursues the wealthy and hapless Sir James for marriage originally intended for her daughter, though she eventually marries him as her own husband for purposes of wealth and profit.

Although adapted from Lady Susan, the film was produced under the borrowed title of Austen’s juvenile story Love and Friendship.

Youth (ItalianLa giovinezza) is a 2015 Italian comedy-drama film written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. It is the director’s second English language film.

YOUTH is about two longtime friends vacationing in the Swiss Alps. Oscar winning actor Michael Caine plays Fred, an acclaimed composer and conductor, who brings along his daughter (Rachel Weisz) and best friend Mick (Harvey Keitel), a renowned filmmaker.

While Mick scrambles to finish the screenplay for what he imagines will be his last important film, Fred has no intention of resuming his musical career. The two men reflect on their past, each finding that some of the most important experiences can come later in life.

The cast also includes Paul Dano and Jane Fonda.
